English Learning will focus on Phonics and Guided Reading sessions during the Autumn term.


Phonics teaching is divided into progressive phases:

Phase 1 covers the building blocks needed for future phonics learning. It covers different aspects such as the ability to listen, talk about and hear the difference between sounds in the environment, instrumental sounds and voice sounds. Also included in Phase 1 is alliteration, rhyme, rhythm and oral blending & segmenting.

During Phase 2 and onwards children are gradually introduced to phoneme-grapheme correspondences. They learn and practise blending and segmenting words and  begin to learn ‘tricky words’.


We update our class page weekly with the phoneme-grapheme correspondences children have been taught. Our isolated learning shares children’s phonics learning in more detail.

Guided Reading

Throughout the Autumn term, children will be exploring the aspects of learning below that link with the early stages of reading.
