  • Hungry Little Minds

    Fri 21 Feb 2020

Mrs Kyte recently ran a ‘Hungry Little Minds’ workshop during Toddler Group. This campaign is part of the government’s initiative to boost early literacy and communication. It gives parents and carers of children 0-5, ideas of how to provide opportunities to develop language and communication. Follow this link to find out how you can use everyday opportunities like going to the shops and playing make-believe games to develop language and communication and give your little ones the best possible start.

We would like to tell you about a really good app called ‘teach your monster to read’. It’s just been approved by the government and features on the Hungry Little Minds campaign, (it’s free until Wednesday) if this is of interest to you, you can download it.

  • Road Safety Week

    Fri 21 Feb 2020

At the start of February, Willowbank participated in Road Safety Week. Road Safety week is an annual campaign usually held in November. However due to the current road works happening in and around the school and town, we felt that this would be an important time to draw children’s attention to road safety.

Each unit focused on a different age appropriate aspect of road safety.

EYFS: Focused upon Making the right choices as a pedestrian which included choosing a safe place to cross and the Green Cross Code.

Unit 1: Learnt about making the right choices as a passenger in a car. They learnt about the importance of seat belts and safe and unsafe behaviour by adults and children.

Unit 2: Focused on the use of bicycles/scooters/skateboards. They became aware of the importance of helmets as well as clothes that enable them to be seen.

Unit 3: Worked on Identifying risks and what to do? They explored: How do we know if something feels unsafe? Who do we tell? What can we do to keep each other safe?

At the end of the week, children shared their activities and what they had learnt during a child led assembly. This was an opportunity for children to perform songs that they had learnt and share their safety posters that they had created.

  • Lunchtime Salad Bar

    Fri 21 Feb 2020

This half term saw the introduction of our lunchtime salad bar! Our Student Council were helped by our school cook, Tina, to put their idea into practice.  Supporting research shows that incorporating salad bars into school lunches increases children's consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. At Willowbank, we feel that through providing these early, positive experiences, children are better prepared for a lifetime of healthy eating.

Children have enjoyed their increased participation in school lunchtimes and staff have noticed that children are trying new fruits and vegetables.
